I am originally from England but moved to Berlin some years ago, after visiting many times on holidays, I decided that this was the one place I would want to wake up and enjoy on a daily basis, for anyone who has never experienced Berlin, then you must. It is rich in culture, history and has a real welcoming appeal.

I love street art, alot can be said for art on walls etc, it tells a story about a person and the area where people live, graffiti is a form of art that some will love and some will hate, but i think it adds character to a place. Long live graffiti. Good stuff

1987 / RARE AERIAL VIEWS OF EAST / WEST BERLIN

Hello,

I flew over the East and West Wall of Berlin 2 years before its fall to make a photographic statement on both side of the city.

Some of the pictures show East German soldiers 50 meters right under my helicopter watching me holding their cap not to loose it in the wind of the rotor.

These impressive and rare pictures can be seen here : www.guillou.com/berlin/berlin.html

If interested you can contact me : alain_at_guillou.com
or by phone 0033 2 40 70 64 48

Best regards and welcome to all those who are interested

[...] 5 – East Germany. I had an East German pen pal when I was a kid and I was endlessly fascinated by his descriptions of his life. Having visited a unified Berlin recently, it would have been interesting to see what life was like during the time of tension and how the East Germans tried to build a society. I wonder what all of that brutalist architecture looked like before westerners came in? And don’t forget the Ampelmann! [...]

I'm truly sorry you didn't find this memorial meaningful. If what you saw was simply rows of concrete blocks then you didn't allow the time necessary to understand what is there. I came to the memorial while doing research for a book, and what I found was overwhelming. If you descend into the maze, you begin to understand the idea of being lost in something so big, so beyond understanding, that it completely envelops you. The idea that the Nazis could eradicate an entire population is that big.

Yes, there are are issues with the maintenance, but looking beyond that, this place is every bit as moving as walking into the crematorium at Buchenwald or the firing pits at Sachsenhausen. At least it can be. If what you saw is concrete blocks, then I'm truly sorry for you. I saw much more. For the record I am neither Jewish, nor German.

I am a Berliner and it is correct about Albert the Bear. The Berliner Bear is a symbol dedicated to him. The city flag in the aforementioned article, is the city flag of former West Berlin (1949-1990). Upon reunification of Berlin in 1989, the crown and shield around the Bear have been removed. The reason? Anybody's guess. More than likely, since both halves of the city had different variations of the flag, this may have been an attempt at appeasement. (This way, no half of the city can complain that their city flag wasn't used). Of course this is only an opinion one may have to ask the Berlin City Council...
